Season's Greetings

Dear friends and supporters of the SCAHT,
Just before the end of the year, we have received the great news of continued funding of our Centre through the Swiss Confederation. This success is the result of nearly two years of hard work by everyone involved. The core of our work over the next four years will be our strategic research programme. Together with regulatory toxicology and our educational efforts this is the basis for achieving our aim to build bridges between academic toxicological research and its application to regulatory decision making in the risk assessment and management of xenobiotics.
The positive development of the SCAHT would not have been possible without the active contribution of you and your colleagues. For this, we would once again like to express our sincere thanks.
We wish you and your families a peaceful and relaxing festive season and a very good start to the New Year 2017.

Martin Wilks and the SCAHT team

The SCAHT office will be closed from 23 December 2016 until 2 January 2017. We will be back in the office on 3 January 2017.

Recruitment for PhD positions in a Marie Curie Innovative Training Network

The project "in3 - An integrated interdisciplinary approach to animal-free nanomaterial and chemical safety assessment" (grant no. 721975) is a Marie Curie Innovative Training Network that aims to drive the synergistic development and utilisation of in vitro and in silico tools for human chemical and nanomaterial (NM) safety assessment. The project will focus on differentiation of human induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (hiPSC) to toxicologically relevant target tissues including brain, lung, liver and kidney. The tissues, from the same genetic backgrounds, will be exposed to several compounds and the data generated will be used to develop safety assessment approaches by integrating cheminformatics, mechanistic toxicology and biokinetics into computational models. The project will hire 15 PhD students to carry out these activities in a coordinated and highly collaborative fashion. The scientists trained within in3 will acquire a unique multidisciplinary skill set giving them a competitive employment advantage in safety assessment sciences, either in industry, governmental bodies or academia.

The project will run from January 2017 to the end of 2021. Recruitment is open now and will remain open until all positions are filled.  Each of the 15 positions advertised is a 3 year PhD position. Applicants must be Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs), meaning that they are within the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree (PhD). We expect the first ESRs to commence employment in March 2017. We aim to have all positions filled by July 2017.

Extended abstract deadline for 2nd German Pharm Tox-Summit

The new deadline is 14 November 2016. The 2nd German Pharm-Tox Summit will take place on 6 - 9 March 2017 in Heidelberg (D). It is a joint meeting of the 83rd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (DGPT) and the 19th Annual Meeting of the Association of Clinical Pharmacology (VKliPha). For further information see flyer and website.

EUROTOX 2018: Call for Scientific Proposals

The EUROTOX 2018 congress will take place in Brussels, Belgium on 2 - 5 September 2018. The theme is "Toxicology Out of the Box". Dr Thomas Weiser, President of the Swiss Society of Toxicology, strongly encourages Swiss researchers to submit scientific proposals in order to help to compile an attractive scientific programme and to further strengthen the position of the EUROTOX congress as the Toxicology congress in Europe. Deadline for submission is 9 December 2016. Guidelines and application form can be achieved here and through

!! Programme now available !! for 50 Years Anniversary Symposium of Tox Info Suisse on 11 November 2016

Tox Info Suisse celebrates its 50 years anniversary with a symposium, being held in the aula of the Zurich University on 11 November 2016 in the afternoon. The topic is "Clinical toxicology through the ages" which leads through old and new themes in the field, being highlighted by national and international speakers. These include the analgetic paracetamol, toxic mushrooms, new illicit drugs, chemical weapons and others. Further information.

The programme will start at 12:00 and close at 19:30 with an Apéro. The language of the symposium is English. The symposium is open to everyone, but as the number of seats is limited, registration is needed. There is no registration fee.

SCAHT groups join Horizon 2020 project on nanosafety

NanoREG II is a large EU Horizon 2020 project concerned with the development and implementation of grouping and Safe-by-Design approaches within regulatory frameworks. Earlier in the year SCAHT was invited to join this project which started in September 2015 and will run over 3 years. The research groups of Prof Luc Stoppini, HEPIA Geneva, and Prof Jörg Huwyler as well as the SCAHT Regulatory Toxicology group, both at the University of Basel, have joined the consortium which has now 42 members from across Europe. The SCAHT contribution will focus on transport of nanoparticles across the blood-brain barrier, characterisation and toxicity assessment of nanoparticles in vitro and in vivo, and contributing to studying current regulatory frameworks for nanoparticles in pharmaceuticals and medical devices. EUROTOX is deeply concerned about the current situation of academic toxicology in Europe

EUROTOX is deeply concerned about the current situation in academia and how it will impact on the future of Toxicology in Europe. Departments of Toxicology in universities are shrinking or disappearing. Toxicology as an academic discipline is essential to protect the health of consumers, workers and the environment. Strengthening toxicology in academic institutions is a basic requirement for scientific innovation and for the education and development of young scientists. The Executive Committee of EUROTOX has recently published a position paper highlighting the challenging issues facing academic toxicology in Europe. See further information.

Next MAS in Toxicology programme starts in September 2016

31 August 2016 is the application deadline for the Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Toxicology programme, starting September 2016. The programme is run by the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Geneva and the University of Lausanne in collaboration with the SCAHT. It is a two year part-time study programme consisting of four day teaching blocks every three weeks over three semesters and requires students to write a Master’s thesis. Successful completion of the course is recognised as providing the theoretical knowledge for professional registration as a toxicologist by EUROTOX. There is a possibility to attend individual modules with free-student status if places are available. For prerequisites and further information click here.
